Supervisor Mark Lesko announced that the 5th Annual Great Brookhaven Cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 21 and the Great Brookhaven Plant-in will be held on Saturday June 9, at various locations throughout Brookhaven Town. The events, sponsored by the Town in cooperation with Keep America Beautiful, Inc., drew over 5,000 residents last year. These events are part of a national effort and last year over 2.3 million volunteers in more than 15,000 communities across America came together to pick up litter, renew parks, and clean miles of roadway, rivers, lakes, and seashore.
“The Great Brookhaven Clean-up and Plant-in gives residents the opportunity to join with their neighbors and make a difference in their community," said Supervisor Lesko, “participants show how much they care about the environment and their dedication to making Brookhaven a cleaner and more beautiful place to live.”
Councilman Tim Mazzei, who is the Town Board liaison to the Division of Waste Management said, “Each year we have high expectations for both events and we surpass our goals every time. I thank all the residents who participate and understand that keeping Brookhaven clean is everyone’s responsibility.”
Individuals or groups can register for the Great Brookhaven Cleanup and Plant-In events at www.brookhaven.org. Free gloves, t-shirts and trash bags will be provided for the Great Brookhaven Cleanup. Plants will be provided free of charge and will available for pick-up for those registered for the Plant-In. Pick-up times and locations will be e-mailed upon registration. As an added bonus, every participant will receive 150 Recyclebank rewards points. Brookhaven became the first municipality in New York State last summer to reward residents for their everyday recycling. Residents can earn points which they can redeem for discounts at more than 3,000 local and national businesses. Recycling not only helps the environment, but also has a positive impact on the Town’s finances. Recognized as a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum, a Champion of the Earth by the United Nations Environment Programme and for Outstanding Excellence in Public/Private Partnerships from the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Recyclebank is headquartered in New York City. The program is designed to help small businesses win government contracts. A business awarded a mentorship will receive 20 hours of one on one consultation. The meetings will be with a government contracting expert and will be held virtually.
Applications are currently being accepted and the deadline is June 1, 2012. More information can be obtained by contacting VIPMentorship@mbooth.com
